Timely and thought-provoking

I really enjoyed this book - not only was it an easy and thrilling read, I thought it brought some really profound topics to light. Given the genocidal times we are living in I think it is extremely clever the way Asim explores how human beings become normalised to violence; and how, when faced with constant contexts of violence, they are likely to respond with violence.

I loved the references to Islamic practices of dhikr as protection from demonic forces, the allusion to the Pharaoh of Musa AS, and the alliance with sorcerers. I also loved the more subtle references to Lord of the Rings (perhaps I am imagining this one but I felt it in the battle scene).

Not only is this a moving tale that resonates with the times we live in, it brings questions of political violence, incarceration, imperialism and faith to the fore. The fact the whole story is inspired by the hadith of the man who murdered 99 people also means that throughout the work a reader is constantly thinking about redemption, God's mercy, and the complexity of human beings.

And perhaps that is what I took away the most from this. That there are no singular explanations to anything or anyone. We are all a multitude of motivations and contexts. May Allah accept the writer's intention also. Ameen.
